Sustainability through precision fermentation: our LCA results

Sustainable, nutritious, and innovative dairy alternatives

Dairy plays an essential role in global nutrition, but meeting the growing demand for dairy proteins comes with environmental challenges. Conventional dairy farming requires significant natural resources, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, extensive water use, and land occupation.

At Verley, we believe in complementary solutions: our precision fermentation technology enhances dairy production by offering a more sustainable way to produce high-quality dairy proteins, helping to meet rising global demand while reducing environmental impact.

The promise of precision fermentation: impact

Precision fermentation is an efficient and sustainable way to produce dairy proteins by cultivating microorganisms instead of cows. This complements conventional dairy production, helping to reduce pressure on land, water, and emissions while supporting a growing population’s nutritional needs.

By integrating innovative biotechnologies alongside conventional farming, we can create a balanced approach to food production that ensures both sustainability and food security.

Our independent LCA

To quantify the environmental benefits of our process, we conducted an independent, peer-reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This rigorous study confirms that Verley’s precision fermentation proteins provide a significantly lower environmental footprint compared to conventional dairy farming.

Key LCA results:

Our LCA compares the environmental impact of producing 1 liter of conventional milk to 1 liter of milk made with Verley’s precision fermentation proteins, combined with plant-based fats and sugars.

The results are clear:

-0%

reduction in greenhouse
gas emissions (GHG)*

-0%

reduction in
water consumption*

-0%

reduction in use and
occupation of
arable land*

By integrating precision fermentation into the dairy ecosystem, we can significantly reduce the environmental footprint of dairy proteins while ensuring high-quality nutrition to all.

A shared path toward sustainability:

Sustainability in food production isn’t about replacing one method with another—it’s about diversifying our approaches to create a resilient and resource-efficient food system. At Verley, we work alongside the dairy industry, providing solutions that allow brands to expand their protein sources, reduce environmental impact, and offer consumers the same dairy experience they love, with a fraction of the footprint.
